The Best of Indian Stand-up

3. Rahul Subramanian : Kal Main Udega (2018)

Rahul Subramanian’s special is an extremely funny one hour set where you will, without a doubt, be laughing the whole time. This set is well paced and there are consistent punchlines and jokes. The entire special is done well from the very beginning, which will hook your attention till the end. The quality and quantity of jokes in this special is stunning. Rahul Subramanian delivers every joke with great comedic timing, amplifying the impact of the joke itself. While it is funny and has consistent callbacks, it feels like many 5 minute sets weaved together. Because of that, it doesn’t feel as tight as some of the sets placed higher up. Nonetheless, I would definitely recommend this if you want to have a blast.

2. Biswa Mast Aadmi (2017)

This is Biswa Kalyan Rath’s first Amazon Prime special and he absolutely kills it. This special truly is Biswa being Biswa and he’s great at it. I first watched this 3 years ago. I find myself quoting Biswa’s jokes even three years later and it is extremely rewatchable. In this special Biswa recalls his experience as a young kid starting a band, his relationship with cricket etc. When you read the description given on Amazon Prime, you know it’s going to be funny. What makes this show great is Biswa’s style. The way he delivers his jokes, his pauses and expressions add a lot to the experience for the audience. As the show is mainly anecdotal to how Biswa grew up, there is a consistency and structure to the set. There are a few instances where he used fillers, but on the whole, it is a hilarious set which will leave you wanting more of Biswa.

1. Yours Sincerely, Kanan Gill (2020)

Kanan Gill discusses his childhood through a letter which his teen self wrote to his future self. The letter consists of a list of goals that teen Kanan expected adult Kanan to have accomplished. This special is excellent and it is by far, Kanan Gill’s best work. The letter added great structure to the special. Kanan would read out one part of the letter then elaborate on that, discuss some incidents he has been through regarding that goal, and then move on to the next part of the letter. This structure doesn’t make the special boring by any means; instead it helps create great pacing. There are consistent call backs which are done remarkably throughout the show and the end ties all the strings together, making it satisfying. This show really excels because of how personal it feels. Kanan doesn’t shy away from discussing topics such as mental health and bullying and never makes them preachy. It remains funny, but has some depth to it. Moreover, this is at number 1 because this is the tightest set of all on this list. Its pacing, script, punchlines and message are all done to perfection. There isn’t a single dull second in ‘Yours Sincerely, Kanan Gill’.
